The Paraplegic in Space
By tradition all astronauts had to be made of “The Right Stuff”, in a likeness of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. It however, has in recent decades been recognized that some individuals may have exceptional brains, character, and even dexterity, and any lack of optimal function of the legs is of zero handicap when floating weightless in space. There is even active recuiting currently for talented astronauts who are handicapped in the legs, just to prove a point. One character in “The Mars Doctor” is a full paraplegic, and he helps save the mission. All the Marsnauts strongly illustrate that a very wide range of physiques and personality types, can all play useful roles in outter space that are unique to themselves. Life on earth is no different. All persons have some value in life, and the community.
